Colonial Heritage
Sucre, founded in 1538, is also known as the White City for its many whitewashed colonial buildings. The well-preserved Sucre city centre is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city owes both its spreading and its beautiful colonial style to the rich silver lodes in Potosi. They allowed the upper class families to move to nearby Sucre and indulge in a sumptuous lifestyle.
Exploring the city, you will get to see some beautiful colonial courtyards, countless churches as well as the region’s amazing weavings. The many dinosaur footprints that were discovered in the city’s surrounding area lead to the creation of a dinosaur park, which is regarded a major attraction by South Americans. If you are in Sucre on a Sunday, you might want to visit the Tarabuco Sunday market. It provides a great opportunity to admire the traditional clothing style of attending villagers. |

Festivals
Sucre livens up towards the end of September to worship the “Virgen de Guadelupe”, the city’s patron saint. The first procession is composed of cars that are richly decorated by the labor unions. In the afternoon, colorfully dressed dance groups parade to the beats of the brass bands until the early morning hours.
The Pujllay festival attracts every March thousands of visitors to the nearby village of Tarabuco. The traditional outfits and music make for a most memorable moment.
